Sweetie Cherry Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)
The name says it all! Sweetie is a standout cherry tomato prized for its exceptionally high sugar content and rich, classic tomato flavor. These bite-sized treats are so sweet they rarely make it into the kitchen—most are eaten right off the vine! A vigorous and reliable producer, Sweetie provides a continuous harvest of high-quality fruit throughout the summer.
Seed & Planting Care
Tomatoes are heat-loving, tender annuals. Success with Sweetie depends on warm soil and a strong start indoors.
-
Indoor Start: In cooler or northern climates, sow seeds indoors 2–4 weeks before your last expected frost date.
-
Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1/4" deep in a well-draining seed starting mix.
-
Optimal Germination: Use a heat mat to maintain soil temperatures between 75–85°F for the fastest and most reliable sprouting.
-
Transplanting: Move seedlings into the garden only once the soil is warm and all danger of frost has passed.
-
Placement Tip: For maximum yields, plant against a south-facing wall. The reflected heat helps the plant grow faster and can result in significantly more fruit.
Growing & Maintenance
-
Days to Maturity: 65 days (one of the earlier cherry varieties).
-
Growth Habit: Indeterminate. These vines will continue to grow and fruit all season long. Because they are so vigorous, they require a sturdy cage or trellis for support.
-
Sun & Soil: Requires full sun and rich, well-drained soil.
-
Watering: Maintain consistent moisture at the root zone. Avoid overhead watering to keep the foliage healthy and prevent fruit splitting.
Harvest & Quality
-
Flavor Profile: Super-sweet with a high brix (sugar) count.
-
Reliability: Known for being a "workhorse" in the garden, Sweetie sizes up fruit reliably even in varying summer conditions.
-
Kitchen Use: Perfect for salads, snacks, or even "tomato candy" preserves.
