How to Grow Sprouts in a Jar

Transforming a standard wide-mouth glass jar into a high-yield countertop garden is simple, fast, and highly rewarding.

1. The Seed Soak: Pour 2 to 6 tablespoons of your chosen sprouting seeds (depending on your specific seed variety and jar size) into a wide-mouth Mason or Ball jar. Cover generously with room-temperature water and soak for 6 to 8 hours (or roughly overnight) to activate the seeds.

2. The First Inversion: Once the soak is complete, screw your stainless steel sprouting lid securely onto the jar and completely pour out the soak water. Tilt the jar upside down at an angle inside a bowl or on a dish-drying rack to ensure total, continuous drainage.

3. The Daily Rinse Routine: Twice a day (morning and night), fill the jar with fresh water right through the mesh lid, swirl gently, and drain it out completely. Always return the jar to its tilted, inverted position between rinses to promote excellent airflow.

4. The Countertop Harvest: Within just a single week, your jar will be completely overflowing with crisp, fresh sprouts! Grab a handful to enjoy immediately, and store the entire jar (with the dry lid attached) directly in the refrigerator to keep your harvest fresh.

How to Care for Your Sprouting Lid

Proper clean-up between harvests ensures your stainless steel mesh remains free of debris and maintains excellent airflow for years to come.

Routine Post-Harvest Wash: After emptying your sprouts, hand-wash the mesh lid under hot running water using a stiff-bristled brush and mild dish soap to quickly dislodge any stuck seed hulls or root fibers.

The Deep Clean Habit: For an occasional deep sterilization, place your sprouting lids directly onto the top rack of your dishwasher and run a standard cycle.
