Phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia)
Often called "Lacy Phacelia" or "Bee’s Friend," this stunning wildflower is one of the most beneficial plants you can add to your landscape. Featuring unique, fern-like foliage and curling lavender blooms that open from June through September, it is a visual masterpiece. Phacelia is world-renowned for being exceptionally rich in nectar and pollen, making it an absolute magnet for honeybees, bumblebees, and other vital pollinators.
Seed & Planting Care
Phacelia is a fast-growing hardy annual that is remarkably easy to establish, provided you follow its specific light requirements for germination.
-
Sowing Method: Direct sow into the garden as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring. It can also be sown in late summer for a fall bloom.
-
Germination Requirement: Unlike many wildflowers, Phacelia seeds require total darkness to germinate. Ensure they are completely covered by soil.
-
Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1/8" to 1/4" deep. Lightly firm the soil over them to ensure no light reaches the seed.
-
Optimal Conditions: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. It is highly adaptable and grows well even in poor, sandy, or rocky soils.
-
Spacing: Scatter seeds thinly or space plants 8–12" apart to allow their lacy foliage room to spread.
Growing & Benefits
-
Bloom Season: Enjoy a long flowering window from June through September.
-
Pollinator Powerhouse: Consistently ranked as one of the top 20 honey-producing plants for bees.
-
Soil Health: Beyond its beauty, Phacelia is often used as a "green manure" or cover crop. Its dense root system improves soil structure, and the plant itself helps catch and hold nitrogen.
-
Quick Growth: Phacelia grows very quickly, often blooming just 6–8 weeks after sowing, making it perfect for filling gaps in the garden.
Garden Tip
Phacelia is a prolific self-seeder. If you allow the flowers to dry on the plant at the end of the season, it will likely return on its own next spring, providing a permanent, low-maintenance haven for your local bees.
