Vintage Persian Heriz "Serrated Leaf" Estate Carpet (Circa 1960s)
Capture the rugged elegance of the Persian highlands with this authentic Heriz carpet. Woven in the 1960s, this rug embodies the "Grand Antique" aesthetic—offering a storied, lived-in character that only decades of time can produce. Measuring 7'10" x 10'4", it is a masterclass in architectural design, bringing a sense of history, strength, and sophisticated wear to a curated home.
Why It’s Unique
This Heriz is distinguished by its dramatic botanical scale and a rare, "oxidized" gemstone palette.
Monumental "Serrated" Motifs: The field is an expansive all-over tapestry of oversized serrated leaves, buds, and floral cross-sections. These motifs are rendered with the bold, "stepped" geometry that makes Heriz rugs a favorite among interior designers for their ability to anchor large spaces.
Turtle Samovar Border with Abrash: The main border features a sophisticated partial Herati and "Turtle Samovar" design. It is characterized by beautiful abrash—natural, horizontal color variations caused by different batches of vegetable-dyed wool—giving the border a painterly, multi-dimensional look.
"Dusty Jewel" Palette: The color story is uniquely muted and sophisticated. A base of dusty ruby red grapefruit and burgundy wine red is cooled by slate blue and dusty powder blue. The highlights are rendered in shimmering metallic tones of platinum, silver, and oxidized silver, providing a luminous contrast to the earthy reds.
Hand-Knotted Authenticity: As a genuine village-made textile, this rug features a charming "taper" in width (measuring 7'6" at one end and 7'10" at the other). This variation is a hallmark of hand-knotted authenticity, proving it was woven on a traditional loom without industrial intervention.
Condition & Heritage Character
This 1960s vintage piece is in restored vintage condition, perfect for those who appreciate a "shabby chic" or historic aesthetic.
The pile shows mostly even wear across to the knot heads, with some isolated areas where the foundation is visible, adding to its authentic antique soul. It has undergone scattered professional restorations to ensure its longevity. The rug has been recently professionally cleaned, the sides and ends are fully secured, and the side cord selvages are intact or restored. It is structurally sound and ready to provide many more decades of service.
