Antique Persian Bijar "Ethereal Bat" Grand Carpet (Circa 1920s)

Elevate your interior with the "Iron Carpet of Persia." This exceptional 1920s Bijar is a masterpiece of both durability and artistic imagination. While Bijar rugs are world-renowned for their heavy, robust construction, this specific antique piece stands out for its delicate, dreamlike palette and a central motif that borders on the fantastical.

Why It’s Unique

This Bijar is distinguished by its mystical central imagery and a sophisticated, "hushed" color story.

  • The "Floral Bat" Medallion: The center features a unique roundel medallion flanked by oversized palmettes with arrowed trefoil contours. When viewed as a whole, the central relief creates a striking, abstract floral rendering that closely resembles a bat in flight—a rare and captivating silhouette in Persian weaving.

  • Open Abrashed Field: Unlike the dense patterns usually found in this region, this rug features an expansive "open" field. It is characterized by heavy abrash—natural, horizontal color shifts in the wool—giving the surface a shimmering, watercolor-like depth.

  • Classic Herati & Boteh Borders: The field is perfectly framed by corner spandrels in the traditional Herati motif. The main border features the "Turtle Samovar" design interwoven with botehs (the ancient "seed of life" motif), providing a structured, historical contrast to the ethereal center.

  • Sophisticated Metallic & Blush Palette: The color story is one of understated luxury. It features a rare combination of dusty blush, rose, and pale faded cochineal red, balanced by a spectrum of "cool" neutrals including silver, platinum, and chocolate brown.

Condition & Heritage

Known for their legendary longevity, this century-old Bijar has been professionally cleaned and is ready for high-traffic in-home use. It displays a beautiful, even wear across the knot heads with a faint whisper of the foundation showing through, creating a soft, authentic patina.

Note: The rug has been meticulously cared for, with localized areas of minor professional repair and restoration to preserve its integrity. Most original side cord selvages are intact or restored, and the sides and ends are fully secured.
