Antique Persian Senneh "Camel & Cork" Medallion Rug (Circa 1910s)

Experience the extraordinary craftsmanship of the Kurdish weavers of Senneh with this museum-quality antique rug. Dating to the 1910s, this piece is an "extremely fine sample" of the region's work, known for producing some of the thinnest and most intricate hand-knotted textiles in the world. This rug is not merely a floor covering, but a high-art statement of early 20th-century Persian culture.

Why It’s Unique

This Senneh rug is defined by its rare material composition and its "inverted" design symmetry.

  • Exquisite Cork Wool: This rug is woven with fine Cork wool—the softest, most lustrous wool shorn from under the neck of the lamb. This results in a silky sheen and a level of detail that standard wool simply cannot achieve.

  • The Unusual Camel Field: While many Senneh rugs utilize dark navy or ivory grounds, this piece features an unusual camel brown field. The field is rich with abrashes (natural color shifts), providing an earthy, organic warmth that beautifully grounds the more vibrant motifs.

  • Tiered & Reciprocated Design: The multi-tiered center medallion is filled with an intricate Herati design. In a display of masterful planning, the corner spandrels feature the same motif but with inverted coloration, creating a mesmerizing "negative-positive" visual effect across the carpet.

  • Bold Fine-Line Artistry: Every element, from the sapphire blues to the brick and cherry reds, is rendered with the "bold character" and sharp precision unique to the high-knot-count Senneh tradition.

Condition & Heritage

Recently professionally cleaned and prepared for its second century of life, this rug possesses a soulful antique patina. It shows areas of varying pile and knot heads, consistent with its 115-year history.

The piece has been preserved with expert localized restorations and features fully secured sides and ends. Note a light, isolated oxidation to the red in the top quarter—a natural aging process of antique madder root dyes that many collectors prize as a mark of authenticity.
