Vintage Persian Malayer "Triple Bouquet" Carpet (Circa 1940s)
Bring a sense of timeless balance and artistic history into your home with this striking hand-knotted Persian Malayer. A classic example of 1940s craftsmanship, this carpet combines the structured elegance of medallion design with the "breathing room" of a predominantly open field, making it a versatile choice for both modern and traditional interiors.
Why It’s Unique
This Malayer is a masterclass in compositional harmony, featuring unique design elements that distinguish it from more common floral rugs.
The Triple Bouquet: The rug is anchored by three central medallions, each housing an intricate interior floral bouquet. This triple-medallion layout draws the eye through the length of the rug, creating a grand sense of scale.
Open Field Sophistication: The medallions sit atop a beautifully open navy field, accented only by scattered minor blossoms. This "negative space" allows the intricate motifs to stand out and gives the rug a calm, uncluttered aesthetic.
Reciprocating Spandrels: The corner spandrels feature a partial Herati design and are cleverly shaped to reciprocate the scalloped contours of the outer medallions, creating a sophisticated frame for the central field.
Serbend-Inspired Border: The main border features a Serbend-inspired rendering of germinating plants, complete with minor cartouches and blossoms. It serves as a lush, botanical frame that perfectly complements the geometry of the interior.
A "Village" Taper: Reflecting its authentic, hand-woven origin, one end measures 4'10" while the other measures 5'5". This natural variation is a prized hallmark of 1940s village rugs, proving its unique, non-machine-made heritage.
Condition & Heritage
This vintage treasure has been professionally cleaned and is ready for immediate in-home use. It displays a charming antique texture with varying areas of pile and exposed knot heads. The rug is structurally sound with fully secured sides and ends, and most of the original side cord selvages have been preserved or restored.
