Vintage Persian Camel Hair Serab Runner (Circa 1920s)
Capture the rugged elegance of the Persian Northwest with this stunning hand-knotted Serab runner. Dating back to the 1920s, this rug is a premier example of "Camel Hair" weaving, a tradition celebrated for its natural warmth, incredible durability, and distinctive tribal motifs.
Why It’s Unique
This Serab runner is a masterclass in tribal symbolism, featuring a bold geometric layout that stands out against a beautifully varied field.
The "Checkered" Boteh Medallion: At the center lies a crisp hexagonal medallion filled with boteh (the ancient ancestor of paisley) interconnected by unique checkered vines—a rare and charming detail that adds a playful geometric rhythm to the piece.
Ram’s Horn Finials: The medallion is anchored by oversized "Ram’s Horn" stylized finials. In tribal weaving, this powerful motif is a symbol of strength, fertility, and protection, giving the rug a commanding presence.
Open Abrashed Field: The central design floats atop an "open" field that showcases magnificent abrashes. These natural ripples of color—shifting between camel, sand, and pale gold—are the result of small-batch dyeing and the natural variegation of camel hair.
Vibrant Jewel-Tone Accents: While the camel base provides a neutral foundation, the rug "pops" with rich accents of cherry and tomato red, sky blue, and jade green.
Condition & Heritage
Recently professionally cleaned and prepared for in-home use, this century-old runner remains a stable and resilient piece. It displays a beautiful antique texture with varying areas of pile and knot heads.
Note: As an authentic village-woven textile, one side measures approximately 7'10" while the other is 8'2"—a four-inch variation that is characteristic of its handmade 1920s origin. The side cord selvages are mostly original or restored, and the ends are fully secured for modern durability.
