Vintage Persian Hamadan "Guardian Serpent" Rug (Circa 1940s)
Bring a sense of ancient mystery and sophisticated geometry to your home with this hand-knotted Persian Hamadan. Dating to the 1940s, this rug moves beyond standard floral patterns, offering a unique "mapping" of symbols that makes it a true conversation piece for any curated interior.
Why It’s Unique
This Hamadan rug is distinguished by its symbolic storytelling and architectural layout, blending tribal motifs with a refined, earthy color story.
Stepped Medallion with Finials: The focal point is a bold, stepped center medallion accented by sharp arrowed finials, giving the rug a strong, directional energy and an almost mid-century modern aesthetic.
Hidden Narrative: The field features a partial Herati-inspired design that is scattered with traditional tribal symbols, including serpents and birds. These motifs are historically woven into rugs to represent protection and the connection between the earth and the sky.
Reciprocating Blossom Border: The main border is framed by a wide band of "reciprocating" germinating blossoms, creating a rhythmic and balanced frame that anchors the complex design of the central field.
A Timeless Neutral Palette: The colors are wonderfully muted and versatile, featuring dusty sapphire and powder blues paired with a warm foundation of antique ivory, sand, beige, and coffee brown.
Condition & Quality
Recently professionally cleaned and prepared for in-home use, this rug is in excellent vintage condition. It displays mostly even wear to the knot heads with small, isolated areas where the foundation shows through, adding to its authentic antique character. The side cord selvages are mostly original or restored, and the sides and ends are fully secured for lasting durability.
