Vintage Persian Bijar "Iron Carpet" Runner (Circa 1920s)
Elevate your hallway or gallery with the legendary durability and artistic depth of this hand-knotted Persian Bijar runner. Known as the "Iron Carpets of Persia" for their exceptionally sturdy construction, this 1920s vintage piece combines rugged strength with a sophisticated, whimsical design that reveals more detail the closer you look.
Why It’s Unique
This Bijar is a vibrant example of "hidden artistry" and the rich, saturated palettes characteristic of the region.
The Hidden Menagerie: While the field is densely covered in a rhythmic Herati (fish and leaf) motif, it contains a playful surprise: a few hidden four-legged animals woven into the pattern. It is a delightful "Easter egg" for the observant collector.
A Kaleidoscope of Color: This runner boasts an incredible spectrum of naturally derived shades. From deep cobalt and indigo blues to rare pops of jade green, mallard green, aubergine, and pale saffron yellow, the palette is exceptionally diverse and jewel-toned.
Painterly Abrashes: Beautiful horizontal color shifts (abrashes) ripple through the blue field, showcasing the authentic, small-batch dye techniques used over a century ago.
The Bijar "Iron" Build: Bijar rugs are famous for their heavy, durable weave. At over 10 feet long, this runner is designed to withstand decades of foot traffic while retaining its vibrant beauty.
Condition & Authenticity
This runner has been professionally cleaned and is ready for in-home use. It features even wear to the knot heads and fully secured ends. The sides have been machine-bound for added reinforcement and longevity.
Note: As a testament to its authentic tribal origin, one end measures 3'6" while the other is 3'10"—a slight taper that confirms its handmade history. It also features a localized expert restoration in one corner and a minor reduction to the outer stripe border, ensuring it remains a stable, heirloom-quality piece.
