Vintage Persian Malayer "Storyteller" Rug (Circa 1920s)
Capture the whimsical spirit of the early 20th century with this remarkably detailed hand-knotted Persian Malayer rug. A true "storyteller" piece, this rug features a dense, seeded field overflowing with life, history, and tribal charm. Its unique pictorial elements and warm, sun-faded palette make it a standout choice for collectors and designers alike.
Why It’s Unique
This rug is distinguished by its incredible pictorial complexity and a rare, "shield" medallion layout that serves as a canvas for a miniature world.
A Living Tapestry: Beyond the geometric shield-like medallions and diamond finials, the field is teeming with hand-woven life. Look closely to find birds, fish, animals, and even human figures interspersed with traditional boteh (paisley) motifs.
The "Seeded Field" Effect: The background features a "seeded" texture—a meticulous weaving technique that creates a sophisticated, speckled backdrop, adding immense visual depth and a modern, grainy aesthetic.
A Rare Warm Palette: The color story is exceptionally inviting, featuring a sophisticated mix of camel, pale tomato red, antique ivory, dark coral, and pale tangerine orange, all anchored by deep navy blue accents.
Authentic Antique Character: Dating to the 1920s, the rug displays even wear to the knot heads with a faint hint of foundation peeking through. This "low pile" look is highly desired for its authentic antique patina and smooth feel underfoot.
Condition & Authenticity
This stable and sturdy carpet has been professionally cleaned and is ready for use. It features mostly original or restored side cord selvages and fully secured ends.
Note: There is one small hole (approximately the size of a dime) in the center field. We are happy to repair this upon request, or it can be kept as is to preserve its raw vintage history. Small, scattered areas of historical mending are present, adding to its unique narrative.
