Jack-O’-Lantern Pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo)
Bring the spirit of autumn to your garden with the quintessential Halloween pumpkin. This is the original, time-tested variety known for its classic deep-orange color and prominent ridges. Each plant reliably produces large, 25-pound fruits with thick, sturdy "handles" (stems), making them the perfect canvas for your holiday carving.
Seed & Planting Care
Pumpkins are heavy feeders that love heat and plenty of room to roam. For the best harvest, time your planting so they reach peak maturity just before the October frost.
-
Sowing Method: Direct sow seeds into the garden after the soil has thoroughly warmed and all danger of frost has passed.
-
Planting Style: Plant in "hills" (small mounds of soil) spaced 4–6 feet apart. Sow 3 seeds per hill and later thin to the strongest seedling.
-
Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1" deep.
-
Sun & Water: Requires full sun and consistent, deep watering. To prevent mildew, try to water at the base of the plant and avoid wetting the leaves.
-
Soil Preference: Thrives in rich, well-drained soil amended with plenty of compost or organic matter.
Growing & Harvest Profile
-
Days to Maturity: 115 days.
-
Fruit Weight: 25 lbs on average.
-
Disease Resistance: This variety is notably tolerant to Black Rot, helping your pumpkins stay healthy and firm while ripening in the field.
-
Vigor: These vines are fast-growing and require significant space to spread.
Harvest Tip
To ensure your Jack-O’-Lanterns have those sought-after sturdy handles, always harvest by cutting the vine with shears a few inches away from the fruit. Never carry a pumpkin by its stem, as this can cause it to break and lead to premature rot.
