Mizuna Microgreens (Brassica rapa var. nipposinica)

Bring a taste of Japanese culinary tradition to your kitchen with Mizuna Microgreens. A member of the mustard family, Mizuna is one of the most reliable and easy-to-grow microgreens. It produces beautiful, delicate lime-green leaves with a mild, earthy flavor and a very subtle peppery finish. Its light, crisp texture makes it a versatile addition to stir-fries, spring rolls, and fresh garden salads.

Seed & Planting Care

Mizuna is a "workhorse" in the microgreen world, known for its rapid germination and resilient growth. It is perfect for both beginner and experienced indoor gardeners.

  • Sowing Method: Use shallow trays with drainage holes filled with 1–2 inches of moist seed-starting mix, coconut coir, or a hydroponic grow mat.

  • Sowing Density: Spread the small seeds thickly and evenly across the soil. Aim for a dense, single layer so the seedlings can support each other as they grow.

  • Sowing Depth: Do not bury the seeds. Simply press them lightly into the moist soil surface to ensure good contact.

  • The Blackout Period: Cover your tray with a lid or another tray to keep the seeds in total darkness for 2–4 days. This "blackout" period encourages the seedlings to develop strong roots and taller stems, making them much easier to snip at harvest.

  • Watering: Mist the surface regularly to maintain moisture during germination. Once the blackout period is over, water from the bottom of the tray to keep the foliage dry and healthy.

  • Light: After removing the cover, move the tray to a bright windowsill or under a grow light. The pale sprouts will quickly turn a vibrant, healthy green.

Harvest & Quality

  • Harvest Timeline: One of the fastest varieties, Mizuna is typically ready in just 7–10 days.

  • When to Harvest: Harvest when the plants are approximately 2 inches tall and the first set of leaves has fully expanded.

  • Flavor Profile: Refreshingly mild with a tender, succulent crunch. It lacks the intense "spice" of some other mustards, making it a crowd-pleaser for all palates.

  • Nutrition: Exceptionally high in antioxidants, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Calcium.
