Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)
A powerhouse of fragrance and utility, Lemon Balm is a must-have for the multi-purpose garden. Its vibrant, shiny green leaves release a powerful citrus scent that acts as a natural mosquito repellent. Growing in lush, full mounds up to 2 feet tall, this hardy herb is as prized for its medicinal teas and culinary zest as it is for its refreshing garden aroma.
Seed & Planting Care
Lemon Balm is a reliable grower, but successful germination requires a few specific steps to get started.
-
Sowing Method: Seeds can be started indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or direct-sown once the soil has warmed.
-
Light for Germination: Do not bury the seeds deeply. They require light to germinate, so press them gently into the surface of the soil and cover with only a very fine dusting of earth.
-
Optimal Conditions: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. While it adapts to most soil types, it prefers well-drained, moist soil.
-
Spacing: Space plants 12–18” apart to allow for their bushy, mounding growth habit.
Growing & Maintenance
-
Plant Habit: Reaches up to 2' tall with a full, spreading shape.
-
Hardiness: A very hardy perennial that often returns year after year.
-
Pruning: To keep the plant productive and prevent it from becoming too "leggy," harvest the leaves regularly or shear the plant back by half in mid-summer. This encourages a fresh flush of aromatic new growth.
Uses & Benefits
-
Natural Repellent: Plant near patios, seating areas, or walkways to help deter mosquitoes with its strong citronella-like scent.
-
Culinary & Medicinal: Use the leaves fresh for a calming tea, or mince them into salads, fruit dishes, and poultry recipes for a bright lemon lift.
-
Pollinator Friendly: When allowed to flower, its small blooms are highly attractive to bees and butterflies.
