Cilantro Microgreens (Coriandrum sativum)
Elevate your culinary creations with the bright, unmistakable flavor of Cilantro Microgreens. These tiny greens offer a much more concentrated, zesty punch than mature cilantro, making them a favorite for gourmet chefs and home cooks alike. Use them to add a fresh, citrusy finish to tacos, curries, avocado toast, and summer salads.
Seed & Planting Care
Cilantro is a unique microgreen because the "seed" is actually a small fruit containing two individual seeds. While it takes slightly longer to germinate than other microgreens, the results are well worth the wait.
-
Sowing Method: Use shallow trays filled with 1–2 inches of high-quality seed-starting mix or coconut coir.
-
Sowing Density: Spread the seeds thickly and evenly across the soil surface. They should be close together but in a single layer.
-
Sowing Depth: Cover the seeds with a 1/4" layer of soil. Unlike some other microgreens, cilantro prefers to be buried slightly to help the seedlings shed their hulls as they grow.
-
The "Weighted" Method: For even growth, place a second tray on top of the seeds for the first 3–5 days. This encourages strong root development and helps the seedlings push upward together.
-
Watering: Mist the soil surface daily to keep it consistently moist. Once sprouts emerge, switch to bottom-watering to keep the delicate foliage dry.
-
Temperature: Maintain a cool to moderate room temperature (65–75°F). Cilantro prefers slightly cooler conditions than tropical microgreens like basil.
Harvest & Quality
-
Harvest Timeline: Cilantro microgreens are ready to harvest in approximately 14–21 days.
-
When to Harvest: Snip with sharp scissors once the seedlings are 2 inches tall and have developed their first set of bright green leaves.
-
Flavor Profile: Intense, clean cilantro flavor with a crisp, succulent texture.
-
Nutrition: Packed with Vitamin K and antioxidants, these greens are as healthy as they are flavorful.
