Chive Microgreens (Allium schoenoprasum)

While garden chives can take a full year to mature, Chive Microgreens allow you to harvest savory, gourmet greens in just a few weeks. These slender, emerald-green blades offer a mild, sophisticated "garlic-onion" zing that is perfect for folding into omelets, topping baked potatoes, or garnishing fine seafood dishes.
Seed & Planting Care
Chives belong to the Allium family and have a unique growth habit compared to leafy microgreens. They are slow starters, but the flavor payoff is well worth the extra days.

Sowing Method: Use shallow trays with drainage holes filled with 2 inches of high-quality seed-starting mix or coconut coir.

Sowing Density: Spread the seeds thickly and evenly across the soil. Because they grow as thin, upright blades, you can sow them quite densely—aim for the seeds to be nearly touching.

Sowing Depth: Cover the seeds with a 1/4" layer of soil. Chives prefer to be buried slightly to maintain consistent moisture around the seed coat during their longer germination.

The "Darkness" Rule: Keep the tray in total darkness for the first 5–7 days. Chives germinate best when it is dark and cool (around 60–70°F).

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Mist the surface regularly during the blackout period, then switch to bottom-watering once the blades begin to emerge.
