Chantenay Red Cored Carrot
A favorite for gardeners with challenging soil, this crisp, orange carrot is known for its deep, "true carrot" flavor that stays rich even after cooking. Growing 5–6 inches long with a classic pointed tip, this variety is specially adapted to thrive in denser soils where longer carrots might struggle.
Seed & Planting Care
Carrots require patience and consistent moisture to get started. For the straightest, crunchiest roots, follow these specialized sowing instructions:
-
Direct Sow Only: Carrot seeds should be sown directly into the garden; they do not like to be transplanted.
-
Soil Preparation: Loosen your soil to a depth of 12 inches. While these carrots handle density well, they reach their full potential in deep, loose soil or raised beds.
-
Sowing Depth & Density: Barely cover seeds with a fine layer of soil. Sow thickly (about 30 seeds per square foot) to compensate for their naturally irregular germination.
-
The "Moisture Rule": Carrot seeds have a hard coat that must be softened. Keep the top inch of soil consistently moist for 7–14 days. Covering the area with a light row cover can help retain this critical moisture.
-
Temperature: Seeds will germinate in soil as cool as 50°F, but 70°F is the optimal temperature for the best results.
Growing & Maintenance
-
Thinning: Once seedlings have a few leaves, thin them to about 2 inches apart (aiming for 18 plants per square foot). This gives the roots room to expand.
-
Sun & Water: Carrots prefer full sun but like cool soil. Provide about 1 inch of water per week. In raised beds, neighboring plants can help shade the soil surface to keep it from overheating.
-
Succession Planting: * Spring Crop: Sow in early spring for a mid-summer harvest.
-
Fall Crop: Replant in mid-summer. For better summer germination, use shade netting to keep the soil cool and moist.
-
Harvest & Quality
-
Size: 5–6" long roots.
-
Flavor: Strong, sweet, and robust.
-
Versatility: Exceptional for fresh eating, but specifically bred to maintain its color and flavor profile during steaming, roasting, or boiling.
