Arugula Microgreens (Eruca sativa)
Add a sophisticated, gourmet flair to your kitchen with Arugula Microgreens. One of the most popular varieties for home growers, these microgreens feature beautiful heart-shaped leaves and tender stems. They are prized for their signature nutty, peppery "kick" and are nutritional powerhouses—packed with Vitamin C, Calcium, Vitamin A, and folic acid.
Seed & Planting Care
Arugula is a fast-growing "cool season" green that is incredibly easy to cultivate indoors. It is an excellent choice for beginners due to its high germination rate and rapid growth.
-
Sowing Method: Use shallow trays or containers with drainage, filled with 1–2 inches of high-quality seed-starting mix or a hydroponic grow mat.
-
Sowing Density: Scatter seeds thickly and evenly across the soil surface. They should be dense enough to look like a carpet, but try to avoid large clumps or overlapping seeds.
-
Sowing Depth: Arugula seeds are small and do not need to be buried. Simply press them gently into the moist soil surface to ensure good contact.
-
The Blackout Period: For the first 2–3 days, cover the tray with a lid or another tray to keep the seeds in total darkness. This encourages the stems to stretch upward for an easier harvest.
-
Watering: Mist the seeds twice daily with a spray bottle to keep the surface moist. Once the roots are established, switch to bottom-watering to prevent the delicate stems from falling over.
-
Light: Once the sprouts are about an inch tall, remove the cover and move them to a bright windowsill or under a grow light to turn them a vibrant green.
Harvest & Quality
-
Fast Results: One of the quickest microgreens to grow! They are typically ready for your plate in just 7–10 days.
-
When to Harvest: Harvest when the seedlings are 2 inches tall and have fully opened their heart-shaped "seed leaves" (cotyledons).
-
Flavor Profile: Boasts a mild version of the peppery, nutty bite found in mature arugula, with a crisp and succulent texture.
-
Culinary Use: These delicate greens make a stunning garnish for pizzas, steaks, and pastas, or can be used as a base for a nutrient-dense micro-salad.
