Antique Persian Fereghan "Eternal Vine" Carpet (Circa 1870s)
Own a significant piece of 19th-century textile history with this rare Persian Fereghan. Woven circa 1870, this carpet hails from an era where Fereghans were the preferred choice for aristocratic estates and grand European homes. Its elongated proportions and sophisticated "old-world" border design make it an exceptional find for collectors of true antiques.
Why It’s Unique
This Fereghan is a masterclass in archaic symmetry, distinguished by its rare 150-year-old border architecture and delicate "Mahi" patterning.
Rare 1870s Wide-Band Border: The standout feature is the "very old" early wide-banded main border. It features an incredibly intricate vinery that acts as a majestic frame, a design element much more substantial than those found in later 20th-century examples.
Serpent & Starburst Detailing: Surrounding the main border are minor bands featuring "serpent and starburst" motifs—ancient tribal symbols of protection and the cosmos, woven with the fine-line precision the Fereghan region is famous for.
Classic All-Over Herati Field: The field is densely covered in the traditional Herati (fish and leaf) design. This rhythmic, "infinite" pattern provides a mesmerizing texture that anchors the room without the visual weight of a large central medallion.
Faded "Antique" Palette: The colors have aged with incredible grace, including a soft powder sky blue, burgundy, and madder root red. Rare pops of faded lime green and blush provide a unique botanical brightness that only true antique dyes can offer.
Condition & Heritage
This 19th-century treasure has been professionally cleaned and stabilized for modern in-home use. As a true 150-year-old antique, it displays even wear to the knot heads with a faint whisper of the foundation showing through, creating a soft, sought-after patina.
To preserve its historical value, the carpet has undergone multiple areas of professional restoration and reweave. It may also have been reduced in size during its long life to preserve the most beautiful sections of the weave. The sides and ends are fully secured, and most side cord selvages are intact or restored.
